Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg expressed being in “denial” about the possibility of attaining his first Formula 1 podium until late in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he finished third behind a McLaren 1-2, breaking his record of 238 grand prix starts without a podium. The podium moment came during a mixed weather race, with Hulkenberg strategically timing his pitstops for intermediate tyres and making no mistakes during the intense competition. Hulkenberg reflected on the survival fight during the race, starting from the back and successfully fending off Lewis Hamilton’s late pursuit. Despite the pressure, he remained composed and made no errors, securing a memorable achievement. The long-awaited podium finish left Hulkenberg delighted in parc ferme, emphasizing his belief in eventually achieving this milestone and his happiness in proving himself on that day. The significant result propelled Hulkenberg to ninth in the drivers’ championship and elevated his Sauber team to sixth in the constructors’ standings, marking a remarkable transformation from their previous season’s performance.
